[TRANSLATION] Myojo 2014.05 - Takaki Yuya 1000 Words Long Interview

My friend asked me to help her out on something, and I noticed also a lot of other fans are desperate to know about this interview. I decided to translate it. It's a really long and sweet interview, Takaki talks about his beginnings in Johnny, how desperate he felt and what made him change his mind to stay in the agency. He mentiones his band members and also talks about Gokusen-Cast (as well as Akanishi Jin and Kamenashi Kazuya). :)

Beforehand I already want to apologize for any mistakes in it because I am 100% sure there will be mistakes. I am far not fluent in Japanese but I tried my best. I finished this thing in a day, so please don't jump all over me if there are mistakes. Overall it's a rough translation of the huuuuge interview. I got stuck at some points ^^;

I started immediately with the real thing, so, enjoy! :)

Q: You're somewhat skinny.
Takaki:
Summer is about to come soon. That means wearing bathing clothes. If I took off my shirt, I should look handsome, right?

Q: Let's start with all the things I'd like to hear. You're born in Osaka, right?
Takaki:
That's right. However, when I was right about to notice what is happening around me, we moved to Kanto*. So I kind of lost all the memories of living in Osaka.

Q: You've got 2 elder sisters and a younger brother. You're 4 siblings, right?
Takaki:
2 elder, 1 younger, and then there's me between.

Q: Did you have a good relationship?
Takaki:
I don't really remember about this, but when I was little, I wore my older sister's clothes. I look a lot like her. It's the face, even now. We get along very well, we also go shopping together.

Q: Were your sisters good to you?
Takaki:
Not at all (laughs). When I was little I was really scared.

Q: So, what about the younger brother?
Takaki:
We got along well, but of course it was all about fighting. When there was something I wanted to watch on TV, we even got into a fist-fight. Our parents got really mad at us. (laughs)

Q: Were your parents strict?
Takaki:
During our meals, it was unthinkable of watching TV. We wouldn't start eating before everyone of our family got together. They were very strict about manners, too. My sisters had very good manners, while I was in an rebellious state.

Q: So they got angry at you too?
Takaki:
Well, everyday.(laughs) No matter how angry they got at me, I laughed. I hid my face behind my hands, thinking if I should cry, or if I should laugh. When my younger brother and I were scolded, I made a funny face to my brother. Of course he would start laughing... that got them even more angry at us.

Q: So that's how it is (laughs). So when you were little, you did Kendo?
Takaki:
I did, I did. At first I got invited to come around and have a play at a Dojo-Hall, but I eventually got interested in it and started it, too.

Q: You also played basket ball, didn't you?
Takaki:
Yeah, starting from my first year of elementary school. I always wanted to become the first Japanese Player on NBA. I also told that to everyone.

Q: Do you also have other things you wanted to become?
Takaki:
I wanted to become a nursery teacher. I love kids, that's why. "I want to take care of someone!". I would play for 3 or 4 hours with them. Because I really wanted to become a nursery teacher, I tried it once in private. That was around after "Gokusen". I'm still in touch with the parents, so I begged them, even if it's for just one day, I'll come and play. We'd sing songs together.

Q: During kindergarten and elementary school, what kind of boy were you?
Takaki:
I was always surrounded by girls because I told good jokes. They screamed. So noisy...

Q: Did you talk to girls a lot?
Takaki:
A very lot

Q: Aren't you a cool guy?
Takaki:
No, I am not a cool guy.

Q: Which type of girl do you like?
Takaki:
If I fall in love, I want to show the best side of me, a cool guy. So it could happen that I fake it a bit (laughs). When my friends are like, "You like that girl, right?!" I say it right away. Also to the girl.

Q: Did you get turned down before?
Takaki:
Nope. If it happens, I don't give up. "But I want to date you!" - just like this.

Q: Seems like you got into a lot of trouble (laughs). How did you get into Entertainment business?
Takaki:
Because I was always playing outdoors, I didn't know anything about it until first class of middle school. My mum was invited to a Kinki Kids concert. She didn't have an interest, so she sent me there.

Q: She didn't send your sisters, but you?
Takaki:
It seems like she thought I had more interest in it than my sisters. I said, "Okay, I'll go!"... and went there.

Q: How was the concert?
Takaki:
It was really good. I was really blown away. Domoto Koichi had such a strong impact on me that I became a fan. The person I went with was a huge fan of Koichi-kun, so when he went by us, they screamed "Koichi-kun!". I naturally joined them.

Q: So after that, you became a Johnnys.
Takaki:
Yes. I thought I want to be as cool! I wanted to be surrounded by girls, having them scream to me in a high voice.

Q: You're flashy.
Takaki
:... because I say out loud what I'm thinking straight away (laughs).

Q: Is that so. And then?
Takaki:
After that concert, I really kept thinking about becoming like this, too. So I went out by myself and did it.

Q: What did your parents say?
Takaki:
My parents told me, "do as you please!". They are quite laissez-faire and didn't really care about it. They were always like, "If you want to do it, do it. If you don't want to do it, don't do it.". And, "If you want to quit, quit."

Q: Did the answer came quickly?
Takaki:
It took about 1 week. It was really quick. The timing was really good too, I think. However, after I got the answer, I wasn't really happy. I was like, "I don't want to go to the audition!"

Q: Why?
Takaki:
That was probably because I was afraid of singing in front of people. I never sung in front of anybody. That is why I had a really low self esteem about my music potential. I noticed in Kindergarten, I thought I was really poor at it. I always wanted to do it, but I only sang at Karaoke. I only sang in front of my family. That's why, even on the day of the audtion, I didn't want to go. I was close to write a text to my parents saying "I'm coming home". They told me, "If you pass, you pass." and I answered "Okay then.". So I stayed.

Q: Did you sing at the audition?
Takaki:
They asked who wanted to sing and of course everybody would raise their hands. But I didn't want to sing so I didn't raise my hand (laughs). "You're not singing?" - they asked me. I told them honestly that I can't sing in front of people. On top of that, after I took part in the audition, my parents and I got called in together. It became like these typical parent-teacher-child meetings. At that time, Yamapi passed us by. I really thought he is amazing. My mum got excited too. From that day on, I started earning money.

Q: You got really excited, right?
Takaki:
Yes, but at that time, I didn’t really understand anything. That’s why I didn’t really get nervous. I didn’t understand anything, I only understood Yamapi was stunning.

Q: So after that, you started undergoing Jr. treatment.
Takaki:
Yes, exactly. Oh, right. At the day of the audition, I received a phone call from Johnny at home. My sister picked it up, without hesitating she screamed: “Yuu! What did you do again?!”. The president was like “Who is Yuu?”. I often got called Yuu. So in the end, he ended up calling me like that. We talked for 10 minutes and I got invited to a Tackey&Tsubasa concert.

Q: Your world changed in just a second.
Takaki:
But my impression got bigger, I started realizing and I got really nervous. “You have to give your best!”, I told myself. The friends from my school didn’t know about that.

Q: So therefore, naturally you became ready for “Living in this world”.
Takaki:
No. I thought that if I wasn’t able to debut until my graduation of senior high school came around, I would quit. I didn’t understand that it would be a hard way to debut, after you just joined the agency. Like Kis-My-Ft2. I thought when I was at their level, I couldn’t debut.

Q: After you became a Junior, you had a part in “Endless Shock” stage play.
Takaki:
There it comes! I joined the Koichi-kun I always looked up to. But we didn’t talk.  After the shows would end, I would call the president and ask if I could keep watching it. So I watched it over and over again.

Q: That time you also entered J.J. Express.
Takaki:
Yes.

Q: Between the juniors, did you think you were the best?
Takaki:
No. I didn’t think this at all. Really. All I thought about was when would I debut. J.J. Express’s members always changed. The next might be me, I thought. I had this feeling. I got angry at it. If there was anything I couldn’t manage to do, I got angry. I sometimes really thought: “That sucks!” (laughs). However I didn’t tell anybody. If you get angry at it, you really want it. That is what I thought. “This isn’t your best!”. So I got angry over and over again, even over the things I regularly did. Suddenly the president arrived, and I felt I had to give my best even more. So I managed to do it.

Q: You received help.
Takaki:
I was saved by so many people. Also by Arioka Daiki, he helped me a lot. We got along well even before we entered J.J. Express. I also received help by the president a lot. When I was about to leave it all, I remembered it’s just a little bit more. So I kept going.

Q: Hey! Say! 7 got formed in 2007, right?
Takaki:
Yes, I was so happy. It was full of nice people. We all liked each other, there was a good balance between us. Even during hard times, we pushed each other, saying “Give your best! It will become better”.

Q: After that, you debuted with Hey! Say! Jump!.
Takaki:
Because I really thought I would never be able to debut, I was really happy when we did.

Q: Following your debut, the drama “Gokusen” was announced. Wasn’t it a hard time?
Takaki:
I guess so, yes. It wasn’t just a drama. It was a lot of hard work. I also watched the second series of it, which had Kamenashi Kazuya and Akanishi Jin in it. “I also want to do this!” (laughs). It’s a good character, isn’t it?

Q: In the second series of Gokusen, Akanishi Jin was wearing these silver boots. You also got to wear them during Gokusen, right?
Takaki:
That time, my clothes were already decided. The others had to decide it for themselves. I didn’t tell them, “I’m different from you”.

Q: As a special volley ball team supporter, your time must also have been hard. Were you busy?
Takaki:
While there was a break from recording the drama, I moved to the Volley Ball place. I ran into the middle of the assembly hall, counting a countdown. After I finished work there, I returned to the drama location. We continued recording for about 6, 7 hours.

Q: It must have been tough on you.
Takaki:
I got helped by BAD-guys a lot. They took care about me a lot. I am really grateful for that. I was so tired.

Q: During Gokusen recording, you got a little cut off from Hey Say Jump. Yabu Kota told that to us.
Takaki:
There really was a time when I had an attitude against the JUMP members. It wasn’t like I don’t like them. I wanted to join their chats, but somehow, because our ages were different, I also found out that I had a fun time with Gokusen members. I enjoyed both. I didn’t talk about it until now, but I thought that after Gokusen ended, I would also quit Johnny’s. I was really gratefull to have received the chance to take part in such an important work. But, you know, I didn't get satisfied with only acting, so I got a little dislike against it. It's better for others to do this, I thought. If it's me, it's impossible. I couldn't become close to be like Kamenashi and Akanishi.

Q: So it was the pressure of being worth to wear that Silver boots of Akanishi?
Takaki:
It was really hard.

Q: After the drama was finished, you worried yourself with the thought of quitting, or not?
Takaki:
At the sime time working with Jump, and filming the drama, I got overwhelmed with many emotions but most of all self-hatred. I am not useful in this world, I thought.

Q: Did you tell that to the other members?
Takaki:
Of course not. I wanted to work it out by myself. I only told it to my family and my private friends.

Q: What did they tell you?
Takaki:
As usual, my parents were like “Do as you please”. My friends were like, “If that is what you really want to do, it should be alright”.

Q: Did you have anything you wanted to do?
Takaki:
There are many different things I want to achieve by going on my own, with my own pace. Some years into the future, I want to have learned a lot.

Q: But, you also put a great effort into all that, right?
Takaki:
That’s what everyone would do. I didn’t tell the members about my thoughts of quitting, but I think that maybe Yabu-un noticed. I only think he did, though. When I went out with the Gokusen cast, he would come along despite the fact of not knowing anybody but me. I thought he was annoying. However, because he did that to me, I was also able to come along to places where JUMP would be at. I really wanted to thank him for that. Hikaru-kun would bring me medicine and vitamin pills after my physical condition got worse because of drama filming. There was no talking, so I had to decide for myself. He took care over me while I was doing what I wanted to. He protected me. Hikaru-kun was a really mature person.

Q: So, after the drama was finished, you didn’t quit after all. Why?
Takaki:
It’s like… I was about to quit. I already walked up to the president’s door and was ready to knock after my hand wouldn’t let me. I couldn’t knock on the door. I thought about the other member’s faces. What would happen if I stopped? What would happen to the members? I had a huge obligation against the members, the fans, also the president. I had to keep this. It would be bad if I really knocked that door now.

Q: That is what stopped your hand.
Takaki:
Yes. If I would have knocked that door back then, I wouldn’t be here now, I think. I got supported by a lot of people, and then I noticed. When I made it obvious I wanted to quit, my parents told me I should do as I please. Though, afterwards my mum told me she is also a fan of me. I am very grateful for that, and also because of my fans. I really thought I would scream out of happiness after I quit. "I want to quit, so let me quit!", I thought. In the end, I started to treasure it and grew up a little. I realized what is important.

Q: So in the end, the 2 of BAD who gave you a helping hand during the shooting of Gokusen, also debuted.
Takaki:
Yeah, finally. It seems they cried. We were so happy about it that in the end, we ended up hugging each other (laughs). We hugged and had a picture taken. We mailed each other, Akito Kiriyama and Junta Nakama did. During their days off, I’ve let them know my gratitude and respect, writing it to them.

Q: You got helped by a lot of people, but the most by JUMP members, right?
Takaki:
They also support me now, and I treasure it. Yes.

Q: Do you think the bond between you and the members of JUMP got tighter, too?
Takaki:
Yes. After Gokusen ended, it took a while until it was my birthday. BEST planned a meeting so in the end, we met. At that meeting, I had a lot of fun. During that meeting and meal, the members of BEST got closer. From that time with 6 members, we got along very well. It took its time, but it worked out. We got along well before, though.

Q: If you could talk to your younger self, what would you say?
Takaki:
What would I say... it depends. I would tell myself not to do as you please anymore. That's why if I don't notice it myself, it's not good. I would also tell myself not to say out straight what I think to others. "Annoying! Why do I have to tell you things like this?".

Q: But during Johnnys World 2020, there was a situation in which Kikuchi Fuma wore the same odor as you did. You directly asked him if he did so. Did you really say that?
Takaki:
Yes, I did so. Certainly. He was sulking.

Q: You don't give advice?
Takaki:
I don't give advice. I don't want to trouble others so I think it's best to go through things by yourself. I think like that, yes, that is me. However, I really respect the members. I am very grateful towards them, because the current me is what they taught me to be like.

Q: You get a lot of nice words by JUMP members, right?
Takaki:
They say that? (laughs) Maybe. When we go out together, we’d all be in the car together. If we don’t return together, I’m like “Take care on your way home”. It’s like that… maybe because I’m the oldest.

Q: You sometimes receive advice from members? You consulted with Yamada Ryosuke at the time he had his solo debut, right? How about consultation with other members?
Takaki: I told him he should just go for it. If it was me, I would do it with 100%. I had a really good feeling about it so I told him. Uhm, yes. Sometimes, we do it. There are things we don’t say, too. I think there are things that can’t easily be told, so sometimes it’s better to keep them in.

Q: So, if you think about Gokusen times, what kind of consultation would you give yourself?
Takaki:
I don’t know. Ah… around that time, I still remember and understand my feelings. But, I think a normal “Do your best!” would be good to say.

Q: So, what do you see JUMP as, from now on?
Takaki:
A long living group, of course.

Q: It is a very  important thing to you, right?
Takaki:
I guess that now it's the best time for us to do as many things as possible. This year is a great year and we all know that, all the JUMP members think that. "Right now is a very important time!". Even if we take a little time, steadily we would become better and better. There's no doubt. From time to time there are really good things happening. I want to treasure this. All the members help me a lot with laughing, there are always there. I talked about Yabu-kun and Hikaru-kun, but also the rest. They’re the moodmakers (laughs). Yamada-kun is the 100% idol between us. Daiki works as the connector between us.

Q: They really have good points, right?
Takaki:
Chinen is a good example of being stubborn, but in a good way. He says what he wants, to anybody. "I don't think so", he says it just like that. He is good at acrobatics. He complains to bring profits for the group. Yuto has a lot of different hobbies and interests, and we all count on him during MC. Keito has the shortest history of us all so he certainly had to give his best, but he worked harder than anyone of us. He went abroad and overseas, so more than the staff, if there's something in connection with foreign guests or fans, he will take care of it. This is a thing we treasure a lot. He speaks English and that makes me want to learn it too. It's always good! Especially when a hollywood star comes over.

Q: So you have that kind of self-centered image, now?
Takaki:
I wonder if it's that. But, right now, I really want to challenge myself with a lot of things. I want to keep being an idol, doing dramas and variety shows. I want to participate in so many things, and inside me I have already decided to give my best. I want to be like so many people. I also want to do stage plays. Therefore... well. Right now, inside me, I have so many things I want to accomplilsh. I have too many.

Q: Where did this desire come from?
Takaki:
I have no idea (laughs) But certainly, I got a lot of fans, so... Also for my fans, I decided to give my best whenever I can. I want to make and produce good things, so I put everything into my work that I can give. When I hold a speech, I'm constantly asking myself, should I say this? Should I not say it? In the end, I end up smiling. I'm enjoying it. But... I still have so much to learn. I want to grow up more and become a real adult.

Q: Now it became really serious.
Takaki:
I want to be more serious, starting from now. Seriously... (laughs)

Q: As expected, you're so flashy (laughs) You want to be more mature, huh.
Takaki: (roar of laughter) I really want to do things straight. I'm serious. Yes, But more than that, currently I want to enjoy my life to its fullest.

To my excuse, I am in no way familiar with Takaki Yuya or the other HSJ members. During my progress of translating this interview I got really excited for their story, though. I think I fell a little in love with Yuya too. XD

I hope you enjoyed, a comment would be really nice~

Wow. Thanks so much for this. I loved it.

Yeah, I didn't know Yuya as well before, but after watching him go to France with Chinen, I realized what a great personality he has and how vital he is to HSJ.

I was shocked to hear he almost quit. I feel sad that he had to endure very tough times that made him want to quit. I know that feeling. I struggle with it too about my current career. But I am so glad he stayed and has brought happiness to so many people and found happiness for himself too.

Anyways, thanks again!

you're very much welcome! it was nice reading about his history, as I have clearly no clue about him or the other members and their history. he seems to be a really nice and sweet person. I'm glad he became to feel better!

I hope you'll be fine with your work, I exactly go through the same right now. ^^; Let's give our best together, Takaki made it, so we can make it too!!
